Duck and Duckling News

Hello everyone! So sorry I haven’t written for a couple days. :( I guess that means an update is in good order. :)

All the ducks/ducklings are great, except for little Angel. She’s struggling. :( First I should mention that while the duck coop might be predator proof, it is most certainly NOT duck proof. They can get in and out of that thing even when both gates are closed! I think the ducklings go through the fencing and the moms fly over the fencing. Anyway. Every morning when we go out to do AM milking, they are out exploring. Well, everyone except Angel is exploring. She’s peeping as loudly as she can and shivering and hunched in a little ball. :( Poor thing! So of course we wrap her up in our clothes or our hands and warm her up. This morning Mikah brought her in the house and filled up the sink with warm water for her to swim in. She played a bit and got her body up to temperature. She’s okay now, but she isn’t growing or active like the other ducklings. Does anyone know what to do? She doesn’t follow all the other ducks around. She just stays put. At this point she could die out there and no one even know!

If we take her in the house, she gets lonely and peeps for the other ducks… Any ideas?

Naomi and I took the ducklings swimming yesterday — they go swimming by themselves anyway, but this session was more by our will than theirs’ ;) — and the spotted duckling dove under the surface! For 2 seconds we just stared where he had disappeared, hearts pounding. Never fear, he reappeared a moment later, his down all spiky like he had just been to the barber and gotten his hair cut in a mohawk-ish style! It was pretty funny!

I had an orthodontist appointment on Tuesday. :D The orthodontist said as soon as I get my rubber bands off (6 weeks for the right one and a little longer for the left) I can move on to the final stage of braces, the detailing! :) WHOOHOO! He doesn’t know how long the detailing will take, but he’ll give us a rough estimate as soon as I get my elastics off.

And I think that’s about it… I’m rereading the Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini. :) Since I’ve already read it a couple times, I skipped all the parts about Roran, Eragon’s (the protagonist) cousin and just followed Eragon on his adventures. Not to mention skipping the first book (Eragon) entirely! I started reading in the middle of Eldest, book 2. ;) Now I’m on Brisingr.

  1. Hinaya, here is what I know about helping ducklings:
-check her rear end for poop build-up, it can cause a blockage. It looks like a tiny, hard marble. If you find one, gently work it off w/ warm water.
-you can feed her sugar water for a few days to boost her growth and energy, that’s what most of the hatcheries recommend.
-are you feeding them something finely ground that’s high in protein, like chick starter? Maybe she’s not finding enough to eat?
-I have had luck letting a singleton sleep with a stuffed animal under a heat lamp. They seem to be satisfied being comforted by any warm body, live or stuffed! ;-)

    HTH, good luck!

    • Thank you for the advice! :) I think we’re going to try the sugar water. Do you have to buy chick starter? Or can you make it at home? How would you make it at home; what are the ingredients? ;)

That is HILARIOUS, Haniya!! :!:

Congrats on your new journey across the wide (and deep and cold and dark and forbidding) Atlantic ocean of finishing up your braces! I’m excited to see your teeth without the brackets on them…you’ll look really clean in the mouth, I figure. Lol. Well, you always do, but you’ll look SUPERBLY clean without the brackets! :D Do you want the people at the orthodontist to sing to you? I’m going to DEFINITELY be there!!! I would never miss it! :D Althought, finishing up your braces, will signal the starting of my braces!! Uh-oh… …braces…braces…will finally take hold of my mouth…not good!! *laugh* Sorry! :D
