First Kids of the Season

Piper had kids — a doeling and a buckling! It all started last night, when Piper refused to eat at milking time. Mom stayed outside with her, and Piper went into labor. Unfortunately, Piper kept falling asleep. Around midnight, Mom decided to go inside and get some rest. When she came outside in the morning, there were two little babies in the birthing stall!

At first Piper didn’t want anything to do with the babies. When they tried to nurse, she bucked and ran away (typical Piper for you). So Mom stepped in. She grabbed Piper, tied her up, velcroed the hobble in place, and let the babies do their thing. They rushed in and started nursing. Piper’s maternal instincts kicked in and within a couple minutes, Mom could let Piper loose and Piper would let her babies nurse.

The little doeling has inherited Pegs’ weird ear! Apparently that trait skipped a generation. :D

Everything’s wonderful on the home front. After all this sadness with the animals, it sure is great to call Mom and have some good news! :D

Pegs is due in less than a week (the 19th) and Daisy is due a couple days after that (the 22nd). Buttercup gave 3 1/2 cups at both milkings a couple days ago. She’s at 3 cups per milking right now.

P.S. To see the pictures in the gallery better, just click on them. Some of the pictures are cut off to keep all the pictures square.

Buttercup

I got a phone call from Mom last night. Buttercup went into labor yesterday. She was 3 days early. The baby, a little girl with all dark colors and a white patch on her forehead, was stillborn. :( Everything was fast and easy and Buttercup was wonderful, but she was calling for her baby.

Mom milked Buttercup last night, several hours after she gave birth, and got a couple cups. It was bright yellow with cholostrum for the baby. Buttercup inherited her mom’s long hair, so Mom trimmed it at her back legs to make for easy milking. She got right on the milking stand and Mom milked her with the hobble and everything. This morning, however, Buttercup had to be wrestled on to the stand. I’m thinking she was so tired out last night that she just gave in. Oh, and it probably felt good to be relieved of that milk.

We’re all really sad. :( Please pray that the rest of the goats will give birth to healthy kids! Pegs is due July 19th and Daisy is due July 22nd. Pegs is lagging behind the herd and isn’t very interested in food so Mom is keeping an eye on her. She shouldn’t give birth for a good 1 and a half weeks, so we’re hoping everything’s all right.

Buttercup was butting heads with Daisy last night, so we think she’s recovered.

Thank you for your prayers!

Even though I try to write down everything that happens around here, there are some things that I forget to record. ;) This is a post that wraps up all the little details I keep forgetting to post about!

Pegs’ milk yield is way down. About two weeks ago, her milk was at 5 cups. Now it’s at 2 3/4 cups. She sure is drying up! Maybe it’s because of the baby. ;) Hope so!

Angel, poor thing, still isn’t very well. We’re feeding her sugar water, as Michelle @ Collie Farm Blog recommended in this comment. :) Thanks, Michelle! She seemed to like it last night (no surprises!). This morning, however, when we took her inside to warm her up, she wouldn’t drink. Pray, please!

And now, a funny story… :) Last night, after the lights were switched off, Naomi and I were lying in bed, reading (with flashlights). The window was open because it had been such a nice day and we had forgotten to close it. Well, a minute later, Naomi sat up, her nose all wrinkled.

“Do you smell that?” she asked.

I sniffed. “No… What?”

“Skunk!” she said.

I sniffed again and BAM it whooshed through the window and into the room. Pinching our noses (it really wasn’t that bad, but of course we had to act like it was horrid! ), we slammed the window shut and gasped for clean air. It took a little bit for the skunk scent to dissolve fully, but eventually it did and we fell asleep. Funny story, right?

And now just one more thing before I sign off. We are going to eat the drake today. Let’s hope it tastes good! Pictures later! :D

Pregnant or Not?

Above is our wonderful, sweet, cuddly (oh, yes!) Nubian dairy goat, Pegs. She is the subject of this post because…. Her milk yield is going down! You’re probably thinking,

“Uh…yeah…isn’t that bad?”

Yes, well, normally that wouldn’t be too good! But right now, when we just came out of the breeding season, that’s super! :) She’s approaching the 3 month mark in the goat gestation period (the gestation period for goats is 5 months), when her milk yield will go down as she puts all her energy into raising that baby. So…pregnant or not? Probably pregnant! YAY!

The rest of the girls (Gingham, Paisley, Daisy, and Buttercup) should be pregnant. They sure are getting fat! But maybe that’s because of all that grass/madrone bark/madrone leaves out there at the moment! ;)

Gingham won’t be giving birth till August because she only just got pregnant (hopefully…it’s still too early to tell). Daisy and Buttercup are about 3 months into their gestation period and Paisley is about 2 1/2 months. Get going, girls!

We are all sooo excited about the little Nubian babies that’ll be running around in a few months. We haven’t seen really young Nubian babies yet! Buttercup and Daisy were already 1 month old when we bought them. :) Apparently their ears hang almost to the ground!

The ducks are all good. Naomi and Mikah took them for a swim in the big water tub this morning. They really wanted to get out! Won’t be long and the ducklings will be big enough to withstand their daddy’s pecking. :)

Yesterday was town day and Naomi picked up a chest of drawers! She needed one for her clothes. Before she was using wire storage cubes, but she found that very hard to maintain. :) So Naomi picked one out yesterday at this newer furniture store in town and we brought it home! :D It’s in a corner, right next to her bookcase and fish tank. I’ll post pictures of it later.

Spring cleaning is coming along well! Today I’m cleaning the bathroom. Only the shower to do now! :) I’m glad — bathrooms are NOT fun to clean. Anyone else share that opinion? ;) Mom’s going to reward all of us for all the work we’ve been doing. (Her idea…but, seeing as she told me what she’s getting me…I’m not complaining! )

And now, off to finish that bathroom. Bye!

Ducks and Goats

The ducks and goats are getting along very well! Last night Addy was off her eggs and picking around the barn (the goat area of the barn) when we came out to milking. Naomi broadcasted some seeds for her. She LOVED that! :D

Over the weekend we tried to get the ducks in their big water tub, but they wouldn’t touch it. :( It’s probably because Muscovys are more terrestrial than other ducks. The Khaki Campbells (which, by the way, we ordered; they should be here around May!!) love water. Maybe the Khakis will lead the way for the Muscovys!

Cosmo and Our Girls

So…what’s been happening with the new addition to our animal family? He’s not homesick at all and loves loves LOVES being with our girls. We stick him and Starle into the buck pasture every morning (unless one of our does is in heat, then we stick her in there with him) and they do not like it. They want to be with everyone else.

Paisley and Buttercup have both gone into heat. And… *cheers* they both have possibly been bred. We’re hoping and praying. Fiddlesticks has gone into heat, too, but since she had trouble with her last birth two years ago, and she’s a Nigerian Dwarf, we don’t want her pregnant. She was very talkative! :D

Gingham is giving around 3 1/2 cups in the morning and 2 1/2 cups in the evening. Pegs is giving 5 cups in the morning.

Once the does are pregnant, they’re supposed to dry up 3 months into their pregnancy. Their gestation period is about 5 months. Mom is storing up lots of cheese for the two months when we don’t have any dairy products! I don’t know what I’ll do without kefir… Oh well. The babies will DEFINITELY be worth it! We haven’t seen newborn Nubians yet. :D

Cosmo: Pictures

We got the buck! His name is actually Cosmo. We picked him up this morning at about 11:00. The lady was really sad to let him go, just like when we had to sell the five Nigerians! :(

He’s doing really well. He was freaked out in the trailer, but now that he’s on solid ground, he’s great. ;) We let him in with our girls and he immediately started sniffing them. Pegs just wanted to rub on him. Gingham told him that she was the boss (I don’t think so, Gingham, dear). Paisley looked on. The babies, Annie, and Fiddlesticks are all freaked out. Starle is a little excited, we think. Finally, another boy!

Cosmo will switch between us and the goats. He’ll sniff them out, play around, and come trotting back to us. It’s so funny!

We were going to take him to some friends of ours, but we decided since we need to breed right away and we don’t want to stress him out with moving him back and forth between two places, to keep him here. Mom and Baba just finished fencing off a pasture for him.

His birthday is February 29. He’s almost 2.

His “stink” really isn’t that bad. It does get everywhere, but it isn’t overpowering.

His previous owner said he’s always bred beautiful babies and more doelings than bucklings, which is really good.

Okay, all for now!

P.S. Speaking of goats, Pegs’ milk yield is almost back up to 6 cups! She’s been hovering around 5 cups for a while now.

Tuesday Twister ~ January, 2010 ~ Peanut Butter

Sorry this is a day late!

Peanut butter: Normally we’d use 1 teaspoon of salt per 4 cups of unsalted peanuts, but this time our peanuts were salted, so we just left out the salt. :D We had this and crackers for lunch yesterday.

Goat report: Buttercup and Fiddlesticks were in heat over the weekend! When the goats go into heat, they normally pair up. Fiddlesticks and Starle, Buttercup and Gingham, Paisley and Fiddlesticks. The former of every group is the girl in heat. The latter is normally not happy that they are the center of attention. We ended up locking Buttercup in with Daisy so she wouldn’t get pummeled by Gingham. Pegs is steady at 5 cups in the morning and Gingham is 3-4 cups per milking.

Tuesday Twister ~ January 12, 2010 ~ Egg Salad

Egg salad: We had this for lunch last weekend! Our recipe made around 7 smaller servings (like a big less than the amount pictured).

You will need a dozen boiled eggs, 1/2 a small onion, cheese (we used Mom’s homemade feta), 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil, 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar, 1/2 teaspoons sea salt, 1/4 teaspoons pepper, 1 teaspoon dill, and 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder.

A cheesy egg breakfast: ;) A fried egg, sprinkled with some of Mom’s queso fresco. Yum.

Goat report: The goats got in the people area today because the gate was accidentally left open. We were just sitting down to lunch and a glance out the window sent us kids scrambling outside! We rounded them up within 5 minutes. If you rattle a bucket full of grain, they come running! :D

Tuesday Twister ~ January 5, 2010 ~ Cookies

Cookies!: I baked the log of maple cookies Mom froze from several weeks ago and also baked the extra 1/2 of chocolate pixies. Yum.

Goat Report: The goats have been enjoying the warmer weather! :D Above are pictures from over the weekend. Pegs’ milk yield still hasn’t reached 7 cups, but hit 6 and has gone down to 5. She should be going into heat sometime in the next week, but not this soon. Weird. Everyone else is doing great. Their coats are so thick! Annie and Starle (two of our three Nigerian Dwarfs) are twice their normal size.

Tuesday Twister ~ December 29, 2009 ~ Granola

It’s almost 2010! On New Year’s Day last, I woke up thinking that it was 2010 and I was disappointed when I realized it was only 2009! ;)

Granola: I have this for breakfast almost every morning! It is so good. Mom soaks and dehydrates the oats and I add raisins, coconut, cinnamon, buckwheat, pumpkin seeds, and anything else you might think of. :D I’m going to try a chocolate based one tomorrow.

Goat Report (previously ‘Milking’): Pegs, Daisy, and Paisley have all been in heat! We had to lock Fiddlesticks in the babies’ pen again because Paisley was stalking her. Pegs’ milk yield went down to 3 cups when she went in heat, but now is up to 5 3/4 cups again! The only baby left to go into heat is Piper. She should have been in heat before Buttercup, because she’s 2 months or so older than the twins.

Tuesday Twister ~ December 15, 2009 ~ Cookies!

This week was the Gallery of Christmas Cookies and so we have WAAAAAY to many cookies in the house. ;) I decided to add to the already numerous cookies and bake some more.

Chocolate Pixies: I made these following Tata’s (Grandma in Arabic) recipe! The texture is a lot like brownies. I skipped the rolling of the cookies in evap. cane juice because I thought they were already going to be plenty sweet — which they were! I think I’ll try only 1 1/2 cups of evaporated cane juice next time. THANKS TATA!

Nutty Minty Cocoa Fudge Balls: I’m getting tired of writing out that name! From now on I’ll call ‘em Fudge Balls. Okay? Okay. :D Next time I make these I’m going to try almond butter or peanut butter instead of sesame tahini.

Milking: Pegs gave a record amount of 6 1/2 cups! She seems determined to keep breaking the records! ;) Fiddlesticks is in heat again and she’s early. Normally the heat cycles ‘hit’ every 21 days. Gingham and Paisley should be in heat sometime really soon. We’ve stopped feeding Paisley in the evening, because she’s not a milker right now and that’s what all the others get. We’re feeding Gingham a bit less in the mornings and evenings because she’s not giving enough milk to get more. And that’s it! :D
