Rain

The autumn weather officially started about a week and a half ago. Normally I’m quite happy to see all the rain, but this year I want summer to stay. Maybe it’s because I spent so much time away from home this summer, and so didn’t get my share of Oregon sun. :) At any rate, winter is coming on fast, and this morning during barn chores, my fingers and nose felt the cold. :P *shiver*

In honor of the rain, here’s a quote from one of my stories:

Rain dribbled off the tent sides and slid into the sand. Rain, marking my departure, the coming winter, plopping angrily at Father. It was raining in the desert….

On second thought, that isn’t that great of a quote, though (I think) it works well in the story. Oh well. :P It’s from the very beginning of chapter two, and rather melancholy. ^_^

And speaking of my stories, I have officially (it was unofficially decided quite some time ago) to have each chapter of my NaNoWriMo equal a day. So “Chapter 1″ is “Day 1.” Should be sorta cool to write! :D

Time to bid you all goodbye, ’cause Naomi has an orthodontist appointment (an insanely early one, if I say so myself :P ) and it’s time to leave for town. *waves*

Restoring the Ruins (Part 2)

The recap post part 2 is finally here. :D Now, because I’m terrible awkward at introduction paragraphs, I shall jump right in to the awesomeness of this post. :P

I’M IN HIGH SCHOOL!

I’m thrilled because…

  1. It isn’t just called 9th grade. No. It’s called my freshman year of high school. And that’s coolness in and of itself. :D
  2. My social studies is called world geography.
  3. My science is called biology. Now, while my favorites of the science “ologies” are climatology, seismology, geology in general, and a couple other things, biology remains, as ever, pretty awesome.
  4. I’m officially in algebra! *faint* YAY! I love algebra! Or at least pre-algebra. I’ve peeked in my heavy-duty, 2 inch thick workbook and–apart from the fact that the size of the font is maybe 2x smaller than my last workbook–everything is overwhelming. o_o

And, guess what?! We have chicks! They up and wandered into our barn during evening milking a couple weeks ago. Awwwwww. :D They’re pretty cute.

And because they have grown up quite a bit since that last picture, here’s another one.

Photo credit my sister, Naomi. :D

Ta-ta for now, folks! *rides zooms into the sunset mountains with her nonexistent snazzy Jeep*

Bangs! =D

Unfortunately, this is not the recap post (part 2) that I promised. :P Not yet. I have sat down at the computer, fully intending to write a wonderful post about chicks, and my freshman of high school, and la dee da dee daaaaa, but nothing came. *sigh* So–for now–I’m afraid I will have to write about something I happen to be terribly excited about. That ‘something’ is probably why I haven’t been able to write about anything else, and once I have gotten this off my chest, I’ll be able to write that recap post I’ve been talking about. :D

Anyway.

You’ve probably guessed what I’m so excited about from the title of this post, but bear with me.

I GOT A HAIRCUT! =D WITH BANGS!

Because I’ve been wanting bangs for years. Seriously! :P But, sadly, my cowardice won out whenever I contemplated this, and I exited my annual hair-chopping-off appointment bereft of bangs each time. But now…

Behold my long-ish sort-of-ish bangs! I could go on about the glory of bangs (and the use of “ish”) for a while, but I’ll spare you that. :P The only downside to my short new ‘do is…well, exactly that. The shortness. I can’t put it back in a ponytail! *sadness* But, my dear friends, I assure you, that is a very minor downside. :P

So. *ahem* Moving on…

NaNoWriMo is in only ONE MONTH! And six days. But who cares about the nuances? :P I can’t wait to start writing! :D This is my plotting face…you can tell I’m busy outlining my third story…and reading great works of literature for inspiration… Bwahaha…

Speaking of great works of literature, I really should read Sir Genius Tolkien again… And what with the upcoming Hobbit movie coming out next year (*SQUEE* Who else CANNOT wait?!)… Yep, I need to visit Mirkwood Forest again. B-)

Also on my reading list: Perhaps a little Sherlock Holmes, as I hope to have a mystery element in this upcoming novel–same as with my last. And Shakespeare. I want to read Shakespeare. I even have Hamlet on my bookshelf. So. *scribbles down* As well as Watership Down, by Richard Adams. <3

Heading back to the subject of NaNoWriMo… I’m really terrible at synopses, but because I promised (see, I’m trying to keep my promises!) to talk about my stories more, I’m sharing the synopsis for my much-anticipated upcoming NaNoWriMo. My apologies if it causes you to wince. :P

After Chloe’s inventor father signs a contract with a ghost-city’s mayor, he’s imprisoned by the very man he just swore to serve. Chloe must figure out what is going on behind the barred gates of the water plant–why her father is so important and why he hasn’t come home–and then stop it, even if it means putting her phobia of water aside.

And now, I’m pretty sure I should wrap up this rambling post. *nod* It might head off down a rabbit trail, and then where would we be?

[Down a rabbit trail. HA!]

Restoring the Ruins (Part 1)

I’ve been terrible. This blog has gone to ruins! And look at me, having had adventures in Kansas and California, now safely tucked away in my spinny chair at home.

Okay, so, I promise to look after this lovely blog more. *pats blog* And a promise is a promise, right? :D I also have a new resolution! Sort of like a New Year’s resolution, except this one…is random and completely out of nowhere. It needs a home. Let’s give it a home, ‘kay?

The resolution (drum roll please): To write more about my writing. I mean, I realized while in the car the other day, that I’ve been writing about only one part of my life. School and animals. Buuuuut what about my writing and drawing? They have been cast to the curb, nursing their wounds of rejection!

Wow, drama queen moment there. But all kidding aside, I solemnly promise to write about my writing. *nod*

And now, I shall continue in this recap post. :D

My trip to Kansas was the peak of awesomeness, topped with maybe a dozen cherries. No, countless cherries. Thank you so much, Mr. and Mrs. S, Auntie, Grandma, Auntie BB, Jenan, my hospitable hosts and cousins, the campus of MNU (it was goooooorgeous), the speakers at the workshop and my friends. <3 I love you all bunches. For those of you who want to know what on earth I was doing in Kansas when I’ve never been east of Montana before–I went to visit Dorothy! :D No, really, I went to a writing workshop. ^_^

My California trip…well, if I were giving out awards for Best Trip of the Year (who knows, I might take that up sometime), it would tie for first with EKT (Epic Kansas Trip). :D The family reunion might have caused an earthquake it rocked so much (I know, I know, I shouldn’t try to crack puns :P ), Yosemite, King’s Canyon, and Sequoia National Parks’ beauty blew me away, the pool was freezing, I got to visit San Franny (plus the architecture and my cousins were awesome), my birthday makes me cry when I think about it–but not in a bad way!–and I really should stop trying to sum up how awesome a trip it was. ;)

And yes, that is the Golden Gate Bridge. Be awed. :P

Thus ends my recap…part one. Bwaha. I shall be back! And to end this post on a very happy note:

You should stay off the walls.

*disappears with a poof*

Wordle.net

Hiya! I came across this really cool site a couple weeks ago. It’s called Wordle and you input a story, a couple paragraphs, or even a sentence, and it generates a picture of the most-used words. Here’s one for the story I’m currently working on (temporary title: East Circus):

So, as you can see, Mother and A’ke are the most used words. When I showed it to Naomi, of course she came up with:

Riiiiiiight, m’dear. :P

Another cool site is I Write Like, which takes your writing style and tells you which famous author it best matches! For East Circus and Freedom Trek my writing style matches somebody of whom I haven’t heard (trying to avoid a dangling preposition, don’tcha know). :P I also got J. K. Rowling for one of my story clips. And for Lianne Staide, my writing style matches someone else of which I haven’t heard!

Είμαι πίσω

The title of this post is Greek for “I am back.” :D

Well…where to begin. :P Miracle is the most adorkable (love that word!) baby goat EVER. I know I say that every time we have a baby around but it’s true! ;) She’s grown a bit and jumps on everything. If you sit down somewhere, you’re liable to have a baby in your lap in about five seconds. And once she’s in your lap, she plunks down and starts chewing her cud.

It’s seriously CUTE. :D

She also climbs into the hay rack and snoozes in there. And she comes into the people area of the barn. She’s small enough that she fits through the holes in the cattle panel fencing. ;)

In other news, Gracie is doing excellent! She’s giving 30+ cups of milk a day. Practically 2 gallons. And her calf, Mercy, is wonderful too. We lock Mercy up with Fiddlesticks and Miracle in the baby stall every night so Mercy doesn’t drink all of Gracie’s milk during the night. Because of that, Miracle and Mercy have become great friends. :)

Let’s see what else… Oh, my novels are coming along great! :D I got a ton of work done yesterday on my fantasy novel and hopefully I can accomplish as much, if not more, work today as then. I’m praying! Freedom Trek, which, if you’ll remember, is the novella I finished in 2009, I’m editing again. It’s currently on its 3rd edit and…yeah. I’m waiting for Naomi to finish reading/critiquing it so I can wrap it up! I’m also working on a sequel for Freedom Trek, but that’s on hold as of a couple weeks ago. Basically right now I’m putting all my novel energy into finishing my fantasy novel, which I’m bringing to…

…KANSAS THIS SUMMER!

I don’t know if I told you, but my OYAN class has a summer workshops/reunion annually in Kansas. I wasn’t able to go last year, which was the first time it was held, but my awesome auntie and super grandma ( ;) ) are taking me this year.

So anyway, I need to finish my fantasy novel so I can get it critiqued when I go.

One last thing, I think. I should get my braces off in a couple months! :D I know it was six mouths away in August but since my top 12-year molars decided to be tricky, my time has been extended. :( Still, as long as my last molar to come in comes in well and fast, they should be off soon! I’m so excited. :D June 24th, 2011 marks my 2-year anniversary of braces so I’m hoping to have them off by then. :P

Ooh, and that’s my signal to wrap this up! My laundry is beeping!

Toy Story 3

[flickrslideshow acct_name="suchtreasures" id="72157624278525747" width="300" height="300"]

We watched Toy Story 3 today — in 3D! Totally awesome. :D It made me cry in some parts and made me laugh (really hard) at others.

[flickrslideshow acct_name="suchtreasures" id="72157624278524861" width="300" height="300"]

And above are more pictures from my ear piercing. My ears are doing good. The earrings twist really easily and aren’t sore at all. YAY! :D

I’m almost done with Fable Weaver! Now to get it signed…

Hello, California!

We’re in California! Despite the lateness of our arrival time (9:15 PM) we jumped into the pool immediately. :D The result: there are very tired people in the house this morning! We didn’t go to bed until 11:30. ;) But what are vacations for, other than to stay up late?

On the drive, Grandma surprised me with a book to read! Fable Weaver, a newly published book by Carlie Gernhart, one of the writers on OYAN. :D I read her II Draft when she submitted it in the 2008 OYAN contest, but her book has changed due to the arduous process of editing. So, anyway, that’s what I’m reading at the moment.

We stopped at our Fairy Godparents’ house on the way here. Sandy and Dave are Baba’s godparents, so I dubbed them as our Fairy Godparents when I was little. :D They are awesome! We ate a wonderful dinner at their house — including potato salad made from potatoes out of their own garden. :D Here are some pictures:

Saturday, the day before we left for California, we went up to Eugene to have breakfast with Aunt Billy (Grandma’s sister) and her husband, Uncle John. It was really fun! Aunt Billy is sooo funny! Here are some pictures:

[flickrslideshow acct_name="suchtreasures" id="72157624253010225" width="300" height="300"]

The ducks and goats are doing great. Or they were, anyway, when we left. Gingham was play-fighting with Cosmo and trying to avoid getting jumped on by Dusty at the same time. Dusty has SO got a crush on Gingham.

Here are some pictures of the animals:

And then some pictures of the ducks in the water tub:

The Complete Novels of Jane Austen

My wonderful, hardback copy of The Complete Novels of Jane Austen arrived in the mail yesterday! :D YAY! This was my reward (other than the wonderful visit from Grandma and Grandpa) for spring cleaning. ;)

I started reading Sense and Sensibility last night, though I didn’t get very far because it was late. I was asleep within five minutes of putting it down.

I read Pride and Prejudice a while ago and just adored it. It was my early birthday present from Mom. She picked it up at a thrift store in late June/early July or so (my birthday is July 30) and was saving it, until I started reading her copy of it. Then she was like, “Well, Haniya, I guess I’d better give you your copy early!” Of course I was really pleased. :D

Any other Jane Austen fans out there? ;)

Duck and Duckling News

[flickrslideshow acct_name="suchtreasures" id="72157624053397822" width="300" height="300"]

Hello everyone! So sorry I haven’t written for a couple days. :( I guess that means an update is in good order. :)

All the ducks/ducklings are great, except for little Angel. She’s struggling. :( First I should mention that while the duck coop might be predator proof, it is most certainly NOT duck proof. They can get in and out of that thing even when both gates are closed! I think the ducklings go through the fencing and the moms fly over the fencing. Anyway. Every morning when we go out to do AM milking, they are out exploring. Well, everyone except Angel is exploring. She’s peeping as loudly as she can and shivering and hunched in a little ball. :( Poor thing! So of course we wrap her up in our clothes or our hands and warm her up. This morning Mikah brought her in the house and filled up the sink with warm water for her to swim in. She played a bit and got her body up to temperature. She’s okay now, but she isn’t growing or active like the other ducklings. Does anyone know what to do? She doesn’t follow all the other ducks around. She just stays put. At this point she could die out there and no one even know!

If we take her in the house, she gets lonely and peeps for the other ducks… Any ideas?

Naomi and I took the ducklings swimming yesterday — they go swimming by themselves anyway, but this session was more by our will than theirs’ ;) — and the spotted duckling dove under the surface! For 2 seconds we just stared where he had disappeared, hearts pounding. Never fear, he reappeared a moment later, his down all spiky like he had just been to the barber and gotten his hair cut in a mohawk-ish style! It was pretty funny!

I had an orthodontist appointment on Tuesday. :D The orthodontist said as soon as I get my rubber bands off (6 weeks for the right one and a little longer for the left) I can move on to the final stage of braces, the detailing! :) WHOOHOO! He doesn’t know how long the detailing will take, but he’ll give us a rough estimate as soon as I get my elastics off.

And I think that’s about it… I’m rereading the Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini. :) Since I’ve already read it a couple times, I skipped all the parts about Roran, Eragon’s (the protagonist) cousin and just followed Eragon on his adventures. Not to mention skipping the first book (Eragon) entirely! I started reading in the middle of Eldest, book 2. ;) Now I’m on Brisingr.

Ready for More?

I guess I’ll give you another story clip since I don’t have anything else to write about! ;) This one is from a story another friend and I are writing (yes…I’m working on a lot of stories right now!). I call the story Age of the Atra, though we haven’t actually talked about titles.

Farri and Eriana sloshed through the mucky spring roads. The sun wiped her fiery brow. A grayish tinge was spreading across her fair face. Dark clouds billowed overhead. Eriana wiped away a tear before it froze on her face. She shivered through her thin dress.

Weeks passed. The world was cast into semi-darkness. The pair lost their way, shuffling through the thick trees. Farri built a fire, but it refused to give warmth. A brook flowed past their camp, but it refused to fill them. Once verdant hills browned and decayed. Morning broke, only it wasn’t morning, but night.

Farri felt Eriana next to him. She felt colder than cold. Farri wanted to cry, but no tears came. Even his own body refused to obey him. His eyelids fluttered shut and he exhaled his last.

One year later…

Wolves abounded. Only one family in the whole of the earth survived the darkness. The family’s name was Kilnea. But their supplies were dwindling. A few moldy potatoes and carrots remained. All of them were almost blind. And then the sun, a mere speck on the dark horizon, died. It sank, plunging into the void, leaving no trace of its former grandeur. The family’s eldest daughter, Linia, watched as it vanished. A few sparks cascaded upward. A tear dripped down Linia’s face.

The family’s last hope had died. Linia sank to the ground and laid her cheek to the frozen ground. The Age of the Atra had begun.

That’s the end of the prologue–we haven’t gotten any farther yet. :)

Put on Your Reading Glasses!

So I thought I’d share some of the story stuff I’ve written recently. :D Ready? Let’s go!

Late at night of the second day, the guards fetched Shrislo from his prison cell. The torches lining the walls flickered in the darkness. Cell after cell, on it went, a maze of tunnels and doorways, a nightmare with no ending. Shrislo shivered. Water dripped from the grates in the ceiling, the only noise other than the sound of clanking armor and boots on stone.

They reached the courtyard. An owl hooted and crickets chirped from somewhere out in the night. Stars twinkled from the heavens. A fire crackled in the middle of the square. Glowing coals winked at Shrislo from the depths. A man robed in black stood in a shadowy corner. He caressed the blade of his axe with a finger. It shone in the half-light cast by the flames. A smile played at the man’s lips, darting in and out of focus.

Shrislo’s guards led him to the fire. An iron block stood a little to the side of the flames. Crimson stained the sides and the top. The man in the shadows stepped forward, boots making no sounds as he tripped forward, eager, excited, impatient for the deed that was to be committed at midnight.

A bell far above rang the hour. Once, twice, three times, condemning a man to death… Five, six, seven… Did the king know a man dead cannot be brought back? Eight…nine… The bells donged louder, prodding the execution along, anxious to see the innocent man dead. Twelve…

Two great wooden doors swung open as the bell’s ringing faded away. The king took his place. The executioner stroked his axe once more and placed it on the chopping block. Shrislo knelt and a tear splashed onto the iron. The gleaming axe rose and sliced through the air, landing with a thud. And Shrislo was no more, his life a mere imprint on the world. No wife or children would mourn his death. No burial awaited the innocent man who died at midnight. No love, no tears, only evil, spreading to the far reaches of the earth, a dark ink blob, erasing all good…

What do you think? Did it inspire you with dread? This clip is from a story I’m doing with a friend. I just loooove writing evil scenes. Not sure why! I can just put myself into the story and feel everything they are going through. :)

Yes, I have more for my avid readers! ( ;) ) Coming up next is a scene from Lianne Staide, the novel I’m writing this year with the OYAN course. I’m really behind — the summer editing workshops start in May and I haven’t even finished chapter 1 (of 12 chapters)! I might just work on this novel 2 years and send it in to the 2011 contest. So here is a clip:

“Margaret.” Mother’s voice interrupted me. “Are you and your family still hosting the fall picnic?”

“Oh, yes.” Margaret smiled primly. “Time nor tide stops Mother’s picnics! She’s already planned a buffet table. We’ve imported the best of cakes and tarts from Paris and London.” She examined the checkerboard and pushed a checker forward.

I perked up. “But I thought all the shipping lanes were closed. The war, you know.”

Margaret raised her eyebrows. “Oh?” She bent over her checkerboard again.

“Yes. The Yanks seized them. Or do you not care to read the papers?” Swift nudged my slipper with his boot.

“Hmm…” Margaret frowned at the game.

Mother shot me a look.

“Pardon me? I didn’t quite catch that,” I said, leaning forward.

“Father has connections…” Margaret mumbled.

“Connections? Yankee connections, by any chance?” The room fell silent. Margaret finally looked up. Her cheeks were red as apples.

“We are loyal to the Confederacy!” She hopped up from the cushion she was sitting on. “And don’t you dare imply differently!” She stalked from the room, chin high and back stiff.

“Lianne! Apologize!” Mother hissed.

That sort of explains the era I’m writing in. :) Swift is Lianne’s best friend. He takes the role of the “ally” in this novel! There’s one more ally but I haven’t written about her yet. ;)
